If you read our last post regarding special head, you will know we are not big fans. Thankfully for us special heads days of performing on Americas Got Talent came to an end after he was voted out this week. Special Head made it to the quarter finals of the show before the public had simply decided they had seen enough.
The levitating monk wowed his way through the auditions rounds with his levitating performance ( if you missed our tutorial for this you can find it here). Special head was sorted into the ” variety acts” in the next round at Vegas. He made it through this round with his horizontal lean backwards over lighted candles. In the quarterfinals of the show special head performed yet another levitation act where he vanished mid air and was seen on the marquee of Radio City Music Hall.. The trick didn’t go to plan as his head become visible after he had supposedly vanished into smoke. Heidi Klum quoted
” we could all see your special head” after his performance the show went
to commercials before the comments from the judges.
Here is the explanation of the illusions he performed both in the
second round and the quarterfinals.
The Horizontal Lean Explanation
This particular illusion has been performed many of times by the likes of Criss Angel and Dynamo. How ever this illusion dates back years, in fact Michael Jackson used this exact illusion in his video Smooth Criminal, where he was seen leaning forward at a 45 degree angle. If we tried to lean either forwards or backwards we would reach a point where our body become unbalanced and we would either fall or have to step forwards to retain out balance. When Michael Jackson did his 45 degree lean he achieved this by having special shoes made for him, which when the time was right would anchor Michael’s shoes to the floor, allowing the dancer to lean at a 45 degree angle without him losing his balance.
Overtime TV magicians have Incorporated “the lean” into there routines and the design has been greatly improved. When the Lean is performed forward as in the traditional Michael Jackson lean, the performer has the strength in their legs to hold the position whilst they are anchored to the floor, however when the lean is performed backwards the “matrix style lean” then the design is slightly different. The same rule applies the shoes are anchored to the floor, but there is also a rod that runs up the performers leg underneath the knee, allowing a much stronger support.
This type of design is most likely what was used in special heads performance in the second round of the show.
The Pyramid Levitation and Teleport.
We don’t personally feel this levitation needs much explaining as it should have been obvious to the public exactly what happened, but just in case you didn’t quite work it out here’s the explanation.
Special head starts off by getting into his trance like state and begins chanting ( man how we hate that chanting! ) he then begins to levitate up above the pyramid, but if you look closely you can clearly see the support that is holding him up.
He holds this position for a moment and then a cloud of smoke appears making special head vanish into thin air, but as the public noticed special head’s head was still visible after the smoke had cleared, obviously he didn’t manage to leave the stage in time.
Nick cannon then enters the stage seeming baffled as to where special head had gone to ( he knew really ). Special head is then seen on the video screen standing on the marquee of Radio City Music Hall, only he isn’t wearing his mic anymore, “let me get this straight, special managed to teleport himself from the stage onto the music hall and remove his mic all at the same time! wow that is impressive”. it’s pretty clear that video we see of him standing on the marquee was shot before the performance had even begun.
Special head was voted out after this performance and there it is no surprise after such a sloppy performance.
